The 3-hour lesson takes place on the beach and in the water using small bow design kites under the tutelage of KSM instructors. Students without any kite experience learn kite safety and safe kite handling skills. This 1-day course is designed for those who want to learn the basics and then sit back and enjoy sailing Maui's outer reefs.
Lesson 2: Kite Kayak Set Up
The second day of lessons picks up where the first day left off with a review of learned skills and typically runs for 2 hours. The student and instructor go for a quick run with the kite kayak to experience how the vessel handles and then the student takes over control with expert supervision from the KSM instructor riding in the passenger seat. You will learn the basic skills of going upwind, jibing (changing directions), surfing the wind swells, and coming back to the beach from where you started your kite kayaking tour.
Lesson 3: Kite Kayaking
The final day of a 3-day course runs approximately two hours with the student setting up and conducting a safety check of the kite, launching and landing the kite, launching and landing the kayak, and piloting the kite kayak on the water. At the conclusion of the 3-day course, students can reasonably expect to know how to safely handle the kite kayak rig in the near coastal ocean.
